We are New York's top experts in wildlife and raccoon control. We are not a typical Albany raccoon control or pest control company. We don't treat wild animals like insects, because they are not! You can't just use poison to get rid of them. You also can't just set a few traps on the ground and call it good. Each situation is unique. And remember, if you have raccoons living in your house, it is almost certainly a female with a litter of young inside. These juveniles must be removed by hand, or they will starve to death and die. And after they are gone, the entry holes into the house must be sealed with professional repairs. Unlike most Albany pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions, by following these steps:
- Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
- Seal shut all entry areas with professional grade steel
- If in attic, we remove the baby raccoons by hand
- Technical and human raccoon trapping appropriate to situation
- When necessary, we clean raccoon droppings and replace insulation
Albany Raccoon Control Tip: What Are The Signs Of A Raccoon Infestation In The Attic?
Raccoons can find their way into many different parts of a domestic property, and are known to make their nest under areas of decking, in outbuildings or even under the porch at the front of a home. However, there is no doubt that the most common area of the property where raccoons can be found is in the attic, and this is probably because the natural instinct of the raccoon is to climb when they are confronted with a potential threat. Because most people will have a cavity in their attic, rather than a loft that is in regular use, it can actually take some time before a raccoon infestation is identified, leading to significant repairs once identified.
Raccoon Feces
One of the most obvious signs of a raccoon being present in your attic is the presence of animal feces, and while this will certainly be present in the attic itself, but you may also find signs of it around your property too. Raccoon feces is usually quite large, similar in size to that of a dog or cat, but it can often be identified as it will have signs of partially digested fruit and berries that are visible in the feces. You should always be careful when you are examining and cleaning animal feces, as it can often contain diseases which can easily be caught, even when you are just disturbing the feces.
Signs Of Foraging Around Your Property
If you do have a raccoon infestation in the attic, then one of the big signs that you will usually find is that the raccoon will have left signs of their foraging in the area around your property. This can include areas where the raccoon will have been exploring your garbage bags or tearing open pet food sacks in order to get in to the food within. Raccoons are also omnivorous, so if you do have a lawn in your yard or garden, you will often find a series of small holes on the grass where the raccoon has been digging to find insects and worms to eat. Other Signs Of A Raccoon Present In Your Attic
One of the most common signs that you will see in the attic itself is that the insulating material that you have used will often have been cut or shredded to be used to make a nest for the raccoon that will allow it to remain warm in the attic. In some cases, especially between the months of May and August, you may also find that there is a nest of babies present, and these can also be making squeaks and noises that can be audible. You may also be hearing sounds of movement coming from the attic, especially around dusk and dawn when the raccoon is likely to be going out to forage and then returning to the nest.
How To Deal With A Raccoon Infestation
Depending on the regulations in your area, the best way of dealing with raccoons in the attic is to use a cage trap to catch the animals, and then relocate them well away from your home. These cage traps should be placed either in the attic, or in the areas around your home where the raccoons are active, and the best bait for the trap is wet cat food or a similar meaty food substance. Once caught, make sure you check the attic for a nest of kits and remove along with the female, and when relocating, choose a rural area at least ten miles from your home where the raccoons won't be a nuisance.
